Ok, I simply adore charming and quaint little towns. Here are some photos of Alexandria, Virginia. A delightful, classy and chic, upscale town... rich in historical beauty... time for a visit!
Alexandria is the kind of neighborhood that attracts people because of its short commutes, extensive treed communities, and easy way of life. Families come to this area to settle down. There is a strong sense of community here, where residents appreciate the rich architecture, history, and close proximity to the waterfront. Houses in this region are each unique.
There is a stunning mix of Tudors, Cape Cods, Bungalows, Colonials, farm houses, and many Arts and Crafts homes just outside Old Town. As a former trolley neighborhood many homes were built in the 1900s and many feature lovely front porches and high pillars. The neighborhood is covered in old oak trees and dogwoods.

All the amenities of fine living are within walking distance. Residents can walk down the block to find trendy upscale shops, great antique stores and diverse restaurants.

The Kings Street Metro is moments from the city center. To foster a sense of community the Maury Elementary School hosts an annual 4th of July celebration.

In addition the Civic Association sponsors a “home show” where locals can meet and greet with landscape architects, designers, painters, electricians and other home helpers, all of whom are recommended by their neighbors.
At seven feet wide, this house on Queen Street is the skinniest in Alexandria. It was originally built in 1830 as a spite house: a dwelling constructed to block bothersome traffic through an alleyway.
The home, which has two stories and boasts a 345 foot living space, was bought for $135,000 in 1990.

Art on the street makes me think of Paris, where you’ll see it for sale every day in little booths along the Seine and of course in the Place du Tertre. In Alexandria we see art on the street only on special occasions: one of them is the annual Arts Festival in September, the other is the Saturday Farmer’s Market in Market Square, which is where this photo was taken.

Union Street in Old Town
Il Porto Italian restaurant has been an Old Town standby for over 30 years. In a previous life a couple of hundred years ago, the building served as a warehouse for merchant ship cargo.
One of the most beautiful and earliest signs of spring in this area is the blooming of the saucer magnolia (magnolia soulangiana).
The Orange and Alexandria Railroad was an important freight railroad that began operations in 1851. It was of particular significance during the Civil War. This is what’s left of part of its route: a train tunnel under Wilkes Street used now only by pedestrians and cyclists.

Catholic Charities Thrift Shop
A Georgian style house on St. Asaph Street. There are quite a few of them in Alexandria, quite charming.
These historic Prince Street townhouses are next to the Athenaeum, just up the street from Captain’s Row.
Toward the river, these historic Captain’s Row homes, even though they are on a slight slope, are close enough to the river that they have experienced flooding at times.
