How to Transfer Images to Burlap

Burlap fabric creates a shabby chic home decor effect with its coarse texture.

Burlap offers a shabby chic touch to chairs, cushions and wall hangings. Burlap is a sensitive fabric, which can be stretched and shaped quite easily, according to The Sewing Partner. While burlap requires some delicate care, it is not commonly used for apparel, due to its coarse texture. Printing and transferring images to burlap is a fantastic way to create unique home décor pieces with your personal touch.

Things You'll Need:

Computer printer

Acetone sheets

Craft knife

1. Print out the images onto acetone sheets using your home printer. Purchase thin acetone sheets to ensure your printer will accept them. Alternatively, place the piece of clear acetone paper on top of an image you want to recreate and trace the image using a pencil or permanent marker.

2. Cut out the images, letters or silhouettes on the acetone paper using a craft knife on a flat, clean piece of scrap wood to avoid scratching your work surface.

3. Lay the burlap fabric on a flat, even surface. Prepare your fabric paints and place them next to the burlap fabric. Place the acetone sheet on top of the burlap on the area you want the images to sit.

4. Dip the brush into the paint and stipple the paint into the stencil and onto the burlap. Make sure to tap off any excess paint before you begin stippling since burlap is not particularly absorbent and the image may bleed with too much paint on the brush.

5. Peel away the acetone stencil. Allow the paint to dry completely. If you are painting with different colors, start with the darkest colors first. Allow each color to dry completely before beginning the next color.

Tips & Warnings:

Rinse the acetone paper off after each use.
